Mary Vitamin for December 6th
Topic: St. Juan Diego (December 9th)
Quote:
Pope John Paul II
"Beloved Juan Diego, 'the talking eagle', show us the way that leads to the 'Dark Virgin' of Tepeyac, that she may receive us in the depths of her heart, for she is the loving, compassionate Mother who guides us to the true God. Amen."
Meditation:
It is unusual for Our Lady to appear to an adult and even more unique to appear to a man. St. Juan Diego must be a wonder of humility, docility, meekness and purity for Our Lady to have chosen him as her representative.
St. Thomas Aquinas
"Meekness is a virtue which implies loftiness of soul. For this reason worldlings usually are wanting in meekness, for this loftiness is found in them but rarely and imperfectly. If they are not the first to use harsh and discourteous expressions, yet when they are addressed to them by others, they resent and return them promptly, showing by their revenge that they have a rude and ignoble heart. And so the servants of God, remaining always quiet and peaceable, though provoked by words or acts, manifest a perfect loftiness of soul superior to all rudeness."
A Year With the Saints, (Tan Books:1988), 134.
Resolution:
I will look upon the simple acts of courtesy and respect as the beginnings of true Marian meekness. If I have the opportunity to return a kind word for a discourteous word, I will remember the example of St. Juan Diego and that it is this type of person Our Lady loves and chooses for her ambassadors.
Marian Vow:
Those with the Marian vow are to "bring the Immaculate to the world." Consider the example of St. Juan Diego and his contribution to the Christianization of Mexico:
"A one-room addition was added onto the east wall of the chapel [where the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was maintained] to serve as living quarters for Juan Diego…Juan Diego devoted the last 17 years of his life to the Mother of God. How tired he must have been at the end of each day after continually relating to the thousands of people who came to see the Sacred Image, how Mary had appeared to him and the message she had conveyed to all men through him."
Dr. Charles Wahlig, "Ambassador to the Queen of Heaven"
A Handbook on Guadalupe, (Academy of the Immaculate:1997 ), 46-7.
I give this resolution to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Thanks be to God for graces received.
