Mary Magdalen. by Bernardino Luini. 1525

SCRIPTURE COMMENTARY #224

And he said to her: "Thy sins are forgiven thee." And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves: "Who is this that forgiveth sins also?" And he said to the woman: "Thy faith hath made thee safe. Go in peace." (Luke 7:48-50)

FAITH is, as we see in the case of Magdalen, the root of justification. Our Lord therefore said to her: "Thy faith hath made thee safe;" because from her faith had proceeded perfect contrition.
