Dear Children of Medjugorje, praised be Jesus and Mary!

1 – On July 2nd Mirjana received her monthly apparition in the presence of a crowd gathered at the Blue Cross, at the foot of Apparition Hill. After the apparition, she shared the following message: “Dear children! I am calling you because I need you. I need hearts ready for immeasurable love- hearts that are not burdened by vanity- hearts that are ready to love as my Son loved- that are ready to sacrifice themselves as my Son sacrificed Himself. I need you. In order to come with me, forgive yourselves, forgive others and adore my Son. Adore Him also for those who have not come to know Him, those who do not love him. Therefore, I need you; therefore, I call you. Thank you.” (See PS1)

2 – The Killer and the Rosary. To understand that Our Lady needs us, it helps to begin with the awareness that we also need her and that her help never fails those who pray to her with a sincere heart. This American Monsignor is a good witness of that.

On May 14, 2009, Mgr. William Kerr, a leading human rights figure, died.  Mgr. Kerr often spoke of his very first hospital assignment, where he ministered to a young burn victim dying from his injuries.  Later, he recalled, he would be called upon to perform even more ghastly duties.

In 1978, the police called Msgr. Kerr in the middle of the night to accompany them to a sorority house in Tallahassee.  When he arrived he was told that all but one of the girls in the house were dead or near death, killed by the infamous serial killer, Ted Bundy.  After administering last rites to one of the college girls who was dying, the police on the scene asked Fr. Kerr to speak with a girl who had survived the massacre unscathed.  They had a very specific question:  Why did Bundy stop right inside the door to her room, drop his weapon, and leave without touching her?

The young woman refused to speak to anyone except a priest.  When Fr. Kerr approached the near-catatonic girl, she told him that her mother had made her promise, before going off to college for the first time, that she would pray the Rosary every night before bed for protection.  Even if she fell asleep praying the Rosary, which she had that night. When Bundy came into her room to murder her as he had the other girls, the beads were still clutched in her hands.

Ironically, Bundy later sought out Msgr. Kerr as a spiritual counselor while he waited on death row.   Over the course of their sessions, Bundy explained to Mgr. Kerr that when he entered the girl’s room, he just wasn’t able to continue with his spree, he dropped his weapon, and he fled.

Such is the power of our Mother’s protective mantle.  Such also is the wisdom of a mom, who managed to give her daughter the most efficient, powerful weapon - the rosary, which later saved her life.

3 – What splendid inspiration our Pope, Benedict XVI, had to launch this Year of the Priesthood! (See PS2) How many times did the Gospa ask us to pray for our priests, for our pastors! This special year is a great opportunity for us to increase our fervor for their sake, and make good use of the many indulgences granted by the Church. I propose that each month we adopt one beautiful prayer, composed by a different saint, and that we decide to pray this prayer every day for a month until the next report.

To begin this series, here is a magnificent prayer from the Cure of Ars, holy patron saint of all parish priests, who will be declared as the patron saint of all priests in the world. Let’s pray this prayer, asking the Lord to grant this same burning love to all the hearts of His priests!

Act of Love of the Cure of Ars

I love You, O my God and my sole desire is to love You until the last breath of my life.  I love You, O infinitely lovable God and I prefer to die loving You than live one instant without loving You.  I love You, O my God, and I do not desire anything but Heaven so as to have the joy of loving You perfectly.  I love You, O my God, and I fear hell, because there will not be the sweet consolation of loving You.  O my God, if my tongue cannot say in every moment that I love You, I want my heart to say it in every beat. Allow me the grace to suffer loving You, to love you suffering and one day to die loving You and feeling that I love You. And as I approach my end, I beg you to increase and perfect my love of You.

St. John Marie Vianney, Cure d’Ars, said:

“If I were to meet a priest and an angel, I would greet the priest first and then the angel ... If there were no priest, the Passion and death of Jesus would serve no purpose.  What use is a treasure chest full of gold if there is no one who can unlock it?  The priest has the key to the treasures of Heaven.”

4 – Vicka, the visionary, still suffers terribly since she fell on the staircase in her home. She is receiving intensive therapy in Zagreb. We may not see her this summer, even though in reality, she obtains so much for us in bearing this suffering out of love. One of her friends said to her the other day, “Surely you will tell me that this trial is a gift from God!” To this Vicka answered: “It is a great gift!”

Dearest Gospa, come with us on our vacation!

Show us how You would live these moments of rest for our body and soul!
