Saint Camillus de Lellis (1614) Converted Soldier who devoted himself to the care of the sick. In today's Gospel for the Mass (Matthew 12:14-21), the last line reads: 'And in His Name the Gentiles will hope.'
That's us! Me and you cause most of us are Gentiles and all of us were not born Christians, followers of Christ. Either we were baptized as infants or later were converts, we now hope in Christ!
But how many really trust and hope in the the Lord and His promises? Are we storing up treasures in Heaven or like the lazy Lazarus, counting it here below? What does the Wisdom of God teach us? We know what our Lord said about all this: Pray always and trust (hope) in God the Father.
When the Lord sent out the disciple to preach repentance and heal the sick and cast out demons, He told them to go without any possessions, just the tunic and sandals they wore and a walking stick. No money, no credit cards, no cell phone. And so they trusted and hoped in God, that He would provide for all their needs; food and shelter. And He did!
This is what true trust and hope is all about. Put God first, love Him first, and He will take care of all your needs. This is not a call to laziness or irresponsibility; we are called to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ by feeding, clothing, visiting, blessing, healing them as Christ has taught us. It is in our nature to love God first and then our neighbor.
Let us pray:
Lord, I will follow You, I will trust and hope in You, that You will take care of all my needs! Amen!
"May the Lord grant all your prayers!" (Psalm 20)
