An Interesting Saint for Our Time: “Lolo, Sower of Joy”: first lay journalist to be declared Blessed

EUROPE/SPAIN -

Jaen (Agenzia Fides) – His name is Manuel Lozano Garrido, the first lay journalist, also disabled, who will be beatified on June 12 in Linares, in the Province of Jaén, Spain. Better known as "Lolo," he was a journalist, writer, with a wide spectrum of talents. He was blind and suffered from an illness and despite having spent 28 years of his life in a wheelchair, was a joyful young journalist and, most importantly, the first layman to be declared Blessed, a model because of his life and his profession. Born in Spain in 1920, he joined Catholic Action at the age of 11. In 1942, he contracted spondylitis, and began to suffer paralysis. In 1962, he went blind and started to lose the use of his right hand. He learned to write with his left hand until he was left completely paralyzed. From that moment, he began to dictate his articles to his sister. He wrote for newspapers, Catholic magazines, and news agencies. He started the magazine “Sinai” in 1969 and won the "Bravo Award,” a prestigious journalism prize. He also wrote nine books on spirituality. The Eucharist was his real strength and his great love that united him to Jesus' suffering. In December of last year, Pope Benedict XVI approved the recognition of a miracle attributed to the intercession of Lolo, in referance to the "scientifically unexplainable" 1972 healing of a two-year-old who had suffered multiple organ failure from Gram-negative sepsis.
