“Bells ring again at San Buenaventura Mission”
Months of painstaking repairs, including a new wiring system and a custom ringer, culminated Thursday when the ringing of the bells was restored, continuing a 229-year tradition.
Adding a modern flourish, workers from Taft Electric Co., who did the repairs free of charge, presented Elewaut with a gift: a remote control.
The device is small enough to tuck under his robe, and will allow the affable priest, who prefers to be called "Father Tom" and whose father kept a locomotive bell in the family's backyard, to ring the mission's five historic bells at the touch of a button.
