[Excerpt]
As the nation's hurricane season begins today, St. Augustine's "Hurricane Lady" is about to go on public display.
Handed down through several St. Augustine families since the early 1800s, the statue came to the city on a cargo ship from Spain that survived a violent storm off Florida's coast. Whether it was a hurricane or not is not known, but what is known is that the statue has been called the "Hurricane Lady" for all of that time.
On June 25, the Sisters of St. Joseph, who own the statue, will open the Father Miguel O'Reilly House at 32 Aviles St. The Hurricane Lady will be displayed in a room in the house, according to Sister Thomas Joseph McGoldrick, S.S.J., archivist for the congregation that came to Florida in 1866 from LePuy, France.
