FEAST OF PAUL OF THE CROSS, PRIEST
The long and winding road
Though Jesus preached and taught a way of love and forgiveness, he made it clear to his disciples that following him would not be easy—something Saint Paul echoed later when he said that the slavery to sin Christ freed people from meant becoming another kind of slave: “of God.” Another Saint Paul, Paul of the Cross (1694-1775), followed Jesus by spending years walking hundreds of miles through Italy in mission work and establishing a religious community, the Passionists, that takes a special vow to spread devotion to the crucified Christ. The path to the kingdom of God can—and probably should—include some rough stretches.
TODAY’S READINGS: Romans 6:19-23; Luke 12:49-53 (476)
