Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children, the Father has not left you to yourselves. Immeasurable is his love, the love that is bringing me to you, to help you to come to know him, so that, through my Son, all of you can call him 'Father' with the fullness of heart; that you can be one people in God's family....."(November 2, 2011)

We are living in a time of grace, a time when Our Lady is with us each day to lead us to God. She is a light that has been lowered down into our darkness to illuminate our way in the very dark days. She tells us that the Father has not left us to ourselves. The Father is not far off! Yet, for many people, God seems distant. He is not detectable. Why is this the case, we wonder? Maybe it is because we have lost our spiritual sensors. We are so immersed in the social and physical realities of post-industrial civilization that we can't discern the God who is near. We are just too used to thinking that we are doing everything ourselves. And we are just too busy to take the time to look for Him.

Our Lady says that God's love is immeasurable. This is another thing we moderns may have trouble with. Though we have forgotten to thank God for our existence and for life, wrongly assuming our lives are our own making, we still find time to blame Him for all the bad things that happen in the world. The thinking goes like this - If God is so good, why is there war? If God is Love, why is there sickness and suffering? Many people scoff at God's goodness, because they are so wounded, so hurt.

But Our Lady doesn't give up. She tells us she wants us to understand that God is our Father and that through the redemption of Jesus we can call Him "Father!" She is calling us back to a childlike relationship with our God, a relationship that knows for sure that God made us and all that is in being, a relationship that is based on total reliance on that same God to sustain us and even prosper us, a relationship that can see the connection between sin and suffering, and understands that God didn't make suffering, He took on suffering to free us from it. Mother Mary is with us to restore our spiritual senses, so we can perceive the Father who is near!

Saint Paul wrote to the Romans:

"For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of sonship. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him." (Rom 8:14-17)

It is the Holy Spirit who gives us spiritual senses. The Spirit makes us able to perceive the loving presence and providence of the Father. We need the Holy Spirit in order to know the Father and His Son, Jesus, who died for us. We are children of the Father. We are the blessed children of the family of God!

Angela's mother sent me this little prayer. Angela wrote it on a scrap of paper and stuck it in her mother's pocket on Sunday. She knows the Father pretty well, I think! Angela's prayer:

God is with me always.  He will protect me every day, and save me from my sins.

My God, you have the love of all the people.

I will love my family as much as I love me.

I will be your daughter of love and good.

Amen

Love, Angela.

Amen! In Jesus and Mary!
