Vatican Diary / The two unknowns of the book on the Child Jesus

Who will be its main publisher? And will Ingrid Stampa, Ratzinger's former manager, again oversee the Italian edition? The strange imbroglio of those who accuse her of having betrayed the pope's trust

VATICAN CITY, August 11, 2012 – "The Holy Father has concluded his third volume, a manuscript dedicated to Jesus of Nazareth. It is a great gift in the Year of Faith. Later, perhaps, there will also be an encyclical."

This is the announcement made by cardinal secretary of state Tarcisio Bertone on August 1, during remarks made after a Mass celebrated in Valle d'Aosta, where he is on vacation. "We will read this third volume," he added, "with eagerness and with great enjoyment."

The authoritative scoop from Benedict XVI's closest collaborator was officially confirmed, at least in part, the following day, with a statement from the press office of the Holy See:

"The Holy Father Benedict XVI has concluded, in recent days, the draft of the third volume of the work 'Jesus of Nazareth,' dedicated to the infancy narratives of Jesus ('Die Kindheitsgeschichten'). This volume constitutes the completion of the two previous ones. The translations into the various languages are now underway, and will be made from the original German. It is hoped that the publication of the book will take place simultaneously in the most widely used languages; this will require an appropriate span of time for the accurate translation of an important and anticipated text."

There has been no official confirmation, however, of what would be the fourth encyclical of pope Ratzinger, after "Deus Caritas Est," signed on Christmas Day of 2005, "Spe Salvi," which bears the date of November 30, 2007, and "Caritas in Veritate," of June 29, 2009.

Cardinal Bertone did not specify this, but it is conjectured that after charity and hope, Benedict XVI may wish to dedicate the new encyclical to the other theological virtue, faith. All the more so in that the new text would be published precisely in the course of the Year of Faith proclaimed by the pope from October 11, 2012 to November 24, 2013.

The Vatican statement does not specify the date of publication of the third volume on Jesus, although it is presumed, given the topic, that it will be within the Christmas season.

Nor is it said who will be its main publisher. And the question is by no means a settled matter.
