“Praise the Lord! How good it is to sing praises to our God…The Lord determines the number of the stars; He gives to all of them their names.” | Psalm 147:1 & 4 August 12, 2012 19th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Dear Friends, Every summer, indeed, several times during the year, if we look up on a clear night, we might see what we call “falling stars.” In reality they are not stars, but meteorites, tiny bits of dirt, the size of a grain of rice, that enter our atmosphere and burn up, causing streaks of light in the sky. Every year around August 12th one of these meteor showers, the Perseids, occurs. If we have the opportunity to see the sky that evening, we should take it. It will remind us of the power, beauty, and order of our awesome universe. It should lead us, as the Psalmist says, to praise the Lord, to sing His praises, Who created, names, and numbers not only the billions of galaxies and stars, but surely watches over the shooting stars, too. | O God, we thank You for this earth, our home; for the wide sky and the blessed sun, for the stars and the planets, for the salt sea and the running water, for the everlasting hills and the never-resting winds, for trees and the grass underfoot. Grant us a heart wide open to all this beauty; and save our souls from being so blind that we pass unseeing them, O God, our creator, Who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen Rev.
