| The HHS Mandate and Wily Providence By Benjamin Wiker Today's guest commentary, by writer Benjamin Wiker, discusses the HHS mandate and its provisions for contraceptives and abortifacients. As most people do not realize the implications of this mandate, or the intrinsic evil behind contraceptives and abortifacients, his goal is to not only educate, but to inspire leaders and Church members alike to learn more and to speak with a unified voice about the travesty this will cause. HEADLINES | | New York archdiocese official defends Obama appearance at Catholic charities fundraiser LifeSiteNews Since LifeSiteNews.com broke the news that President Barack Obama had accepted the invitation to speak at the major fundraiser for New York Catholic charities in October (the website for the event now also lists Mitt Romney as a speaker), there has been much discussion over the president's upcoming appearance. While calls for comment into the Archdiocese of New York have not been returned, a blog featured on the main page of the archdiocesan website defends the invite of Obama to the October 18 Al Smith Dinner as "important in this time of pathologically toxic politics." |
| Chick-fil-A firestorm: A preview of HHS mandate dangers American Life League The mayors of Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. are publicly threatening Chick-fil-A, telling them they are not welcome to expand in "their" cities because CEO Dan Cathy does not support same-sex marriage. . . . It does not seem to matter that the First Amendment is crystal clear: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech." Unfortunately, these political thugs are only echoing the same tactics our own President is using to impose the funding of abortion on all Americans in his HHS Mandate. Obama's Department of Justice is arguing in the courts that private owners of a family business must not be allowed "to impose" their personal religious beliefs on their own company. |
| Wellness Times Recently on the Dr. Oz Show, Carolyn Westhoff, MD, from Columbia University Medical Center [who serves as senior medical adviser for Planned Parenthood Federation of America] . . . actually recommended the birth control pill to women of all ages, and especially women over 40, claiming it could reduce cancer risk by as much as 50 percent. [She] focused especially on ovarian and endometrial cancers but also said it could reduce colon cancer risk by 20 percent. Westhoff recommended taking it for at least five years, saying that taking it longer would be of even greater benefit. As a physician specializing in women's health issues I'm strongly opposed to advising women to take synthetic hormones for most of their adult menstruating years as a means to prevent cancer. While there may be some truth to claims that the pill could play a role in preventing certain types of cancer in some women, it also appears to increase risks of other cancers, and it has many undesirable potential side effects-including some that are life-threatening. | |
