Dear Family of Mary!
Novena for Priests - Day 8
"...Pray for those whom my Son has chosen that they can always live through Him and in Him, the High Priest. Thank you." (March 2, 2012)
Sr. Briege McKenna:
One
final thought about faith and priestly ministry. A priest, as I have
said, gets his power from God in the Sacrament of Holy Orders, from the
Holy Spirit who speaks to him in prayer and to him through the church.
His power comes from his union with God through prayer. He does not get
power from the theological studies or academic degrees. While study is
important and while we need theologians and scholars, knowledge can
never replace faith, can never replace being one with God through prayer
and relying on him exclusively.
It
is the power of Jesus Christ that converts and transforms people...The
Cure of Ars is a good example of a priest who relied solely on the power
of his Lord. John Vianney was nearly refused ordination because he was
such a poor student. Yet, once ordained and filled with the power of the
priesthood, he became known by people throughout the world for his
wisdom and pastoral insights in the confessional. People came to Ars,
France, from throughout the world to confess to him, to ask him for
prayer.
Priests
should never feel inadequate because they may lack doctorates or other
recognized educational achievements. Once ordained, the sacrament
contains the power the priest needs for his mission in the church. (Sr.
Briege Mckenna. "Miracles Do Happen". P. 81)
A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
Keep them, I pray Thee, dearest Lord. Keep them, for they are Thine
The priests whose lives burn out before Thy consecrated shrine.
Keep them, for they are in the world though from the world apart.
When earthly treasures tempt, allure - Shelter them in Thy heart.
Keep them and comfort them in hours of loneliness and pain,
when all their life of sacrifice for souls seems but in vain.
Keep them and remember Lord, they have no one but Thee.
They have only human hearts, with human frailty.
Keep them as spotless as the Host, that daily they caress;
their every thought and word and deed, deign, dearest Lord, to bless.
The
power of the priest comes directly from Jesus, who lives and works
through him as he administers the Sacraments and prays with his people.
We can meet you, Jesus, in the priest. We thank you, Jesus, High
Priest, for giving us your beloved sons, the priests!
In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
