In the silence...

St. John Eudes
Dear Family of Mary!
As I was praying yesterday, I came across this entry in St. Faustina's diary:
Silence is
so powerful a language that it reaches the throne of the living God.
Silence is His language, though secret, yet living and powerful. (888
Diary of St. Faustina)
I felt a lot of grace from
these words. I wondered how silence could be a language. What can
possibly be communicated without sound or words? How could such silence
actually reach the throne of God? It is truly a mystery. Yet Our Lady
has invited us into that mystery in her messages. Our Lady has asked us
to enter into silence. In relation to prayer, she has advised silence.
Here is a message she gave to the early prayer group led by Jelena
Vasilj:
Tuesday, June 24, 1986, to the prayer group:
"I beseech you, withdraw in silence. Your obligation is not so much to do, but to adore God, to stay with Him."
"I beseech you, withdraw in silence. Your obligation is not so much to do, but to adore God, to stay with Him."
This instruction from Our Lady is so simple yet deep. She advised the group not to become overly busy with activities, but to "withdraw in silence".
This group spent hours in prayer, often led by Our Lady through Jelena
as to how to remain with Jesus, how to adore Him, how to listen to Him.
Silence was the key for the prayer group. Not just the silence that is
absence of sound, but the silence that is interior. It is the kind of
silence that is attentive, listening, open-hearted waiting for the Lord.
This kind of silence is like the silence of the watchman, who awaits
the arrival of the King. This silence is expectant, and vibrant with
hope. This silence gazes upon the Lord is love and amazement, void of
words but full of affection. It communicates without words. It
communicates with surrender.
Our Lady has asked us in her subsequent messages to enter into this kind of silence as well:
July
25, 1998 "Dear children! Today, little children, I invite you, through
prayer, to be with Jesus, so that through a personal experience of
prayer you may be able to discover the beauty of God's creatures. You
cannot speak or witness about prayer, if you do not pray. That is why,
little children, in the silence of the heart, remain with Jesus, so that
He may change and transform you with His love. This, little children,
is a time of grace for you. Make good use of it for your personal
conversion, because when you have God, you have everything. Thank you
for having responded to my call."
"In the silence of the heart, remain with Jesus..."
To remain with Jesus, to gaze upon Him, to contemplate His acts of love
for us, to listen for His words of love in the Scriptures, to allow Him
to touch us in the depths of our wounded hearts, this is where the
language of silence is heard. We are called to enter our hearts where
Jesus awaits us, and there to speak the language of silence with Him. It
is in silence that our spiritual eyes connect with His, and we let Him
see into our souls and breathe His healing love into them. Silence.
Well, you see what I am
trying to say. Like St. Faustina, we are called to enter into silence so
that we can actually experience and communicate Jesus. Let's pray for
one another, that we can do it!!
In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
