Feast of St. Matthew the Apostle

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! You are all my children.  I love you.  But, little children, you must not forget that without prayer you cannot be close to me.  In these times Satan wants to create disorder in your hearts and in your families.  Little children, do not give in.  You should not allow him to lead you and your life.  I love you and intercede before God for you.  Little children, pray.  Thank you for having responded to my call." (January 25, 1994)

This is one of the most motherly of all Our Lady's messages!  Our Lady uses the word children five times, and addresses us as "little children" three times!  Is she trying to tell us something?

I think she is speaking straight from her heart.  Why?  Because she sees her little ones in danger.  "In these times Satan wants to create disorder in your hearts and in your families."  Mother Mary is very aware of Satan and his strategies.  She sees him very clearly.  He can't hide from her or fool her.  She sees him prowling around our families, trying to find a way into our relationships and our plans.  He wants to distract us from our duties and plant destructive desires in our hearts, desires that will lead us into his camp.

And so, like a good mother, Mary is warning us of our danger and giving us the way out of danger.  She is warning us to stay close to her.  We are her children, all of us!  And she wants us close to her.  Like any good mother she knows that her children are not safe if they wander off.  We need to stay really close to her because there is danger nearby.

I have enjoyed watching little children over the years.  When they are around one year old they begin to venture a little way away from their mother during their play times.  They don't cling quite so much.  They start to walk.  Soon they are exploring the room.  But during this time of exploration, they try to stay within eye-shot of their mother.  And they regularly look up to see if momma is still there and if she is looking at them.  It is so cute.  They just glance up every few seconds to lock eyes with momma.  As long as she is watching, they feel secure.  This little interlude of time doesn't last too long, maybe a couple of months, but it is a beautiful demonstration of the mother-child bond.

Staying close to Our Lady may be a similar process.  Through prayer, we can keep the eyes of our hearts locked on Our Lady so that we never get too far away from her.  Through prayer, we can glance at her and receive from her the directions we need so that we do not fall into the hands of our enemy.  She is watching over us.  But we need to keep in constant contact with her.
And so Our Lady simply says, "Little children, pray."  Before every task, pray.  Before every decision, pray.  Before every meal, pray.  Before every conversation, pray.  Do nothing without prayer.  Take nothing for granted.  The enemy is always nearby, looking for an opportunity.  If we keep the eyes of our hearts on our Mother, she will guide us safely through our day.  In fact she will help us win many victories over our enemy!  Life could be so different!

"Dear children! You are all my children.  I love you."
