Biography of John M. Haffert Challenges Doubts About the Phenomena of Miracles

Edna McGrew’s new book offers a different perspective on miracles in the accelerating “God Debate”

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J., Aug. 11, 2009 — Author Edna McGrew’s second book, the biography “Herald of the Fatima Apparitions: John M. Haffert,” doesn’t debate the existence of miracles. Rather, it focuses on how a miracle - and belief in a miracle - can have a profound influence on the life of an individual.

McGrew’s book illustrates how Haffert’s belief in the “Miracle of the Sun” changed his life. Haffert - an author and religious figure - was co-founder of the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima, a Roman Catholic Marian Society with about 25 million members worldwide.

Our Lady of Fatima is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary when she appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal on the 13th day of six consecutive months in 1917, beginning in May. According to accounts, the Lady promised a miracle for the final apparition on Oct. 13, 1917, so that all would believe. What occurred became known as the “Miracle of the Sun.” Approximately 70,000 watched as the sun appeared to change colors and rotate, like a fire wheel towards the earth.

McGrew’s book details how Haffert’s accomplishments were guided by his belief in the “Miracle of the Sun.” Haffert has been called one of the most illustrious lay Catholics of the United States in the 20th century.

Much like author McGrew, Haffert, in his more than 25 books, did not argue about the validity of miracles. Rather, he stressed that not only do miracles occur but that Fatima’s “Miracle of the Sun” was unprecedented: Never before had a miracle occurred that took place at the specified time and exact location predicted.

One story surrounding the “Miracle of the Sun” notes that it had been raining on and off for two days and the area was a sea of mud and puddles, some of which were two feet deep. Everyone was wet and chilled from standing long hours in the rain. When the miracle ended 12 minutes later, there were no puddles, and everyone’s clothes were completely dry and clean. For those involved in the debate over whether this was a miracle, the question has been raised: “Since when do hallucinations dry clothes?”

World-famous Catholic author, Dr. Thomas Petrisko, wrote to McGrew: “Congratulations on a wonderful and important work.”
