An initiative of the Association Mary of Nazareth  Subscribe April 30 – Our Lady of Africa (Algiers, Algeria, 1876) - Saint Joseph Benedict Cottolengo   A statuette of the Madonna placed between three branches of an elm    When Louis Pavy was named bishop of Algiers, Algeria, in 1846, both Miss Berger and Miss Cinquin, who had served him since he was an assistant parish priest in Lyons, France, asked for permission to follow him to Africa. The two women worked in the minor seminary opened by the new prelate after his arrival in Algiers, one as a nurse and the other as a seamstress. There was a dirt path just outside the seminary leading down to the sea through a narrow ravine where, under abundant vegetation, flowed a stream. Between three branches of an elm, with a canopy of ivy, the women put a small statue of the Madonna, a replica of the one venerated in the Fourvière chapel in Lyons. They often went there to pray. Sometime later, giving in to their respectful insistence, Bishop Pavy built a grotto for them made of rocks and seashells to house "Our Lady of the Ravine," and he solemnly inaugurated the modest oratory. The little shrine became a place of pilgrimage, decorated with candles and votive offerings, military medals, and crutches, left by the people in gratitude to the Virgin. It stayed pretty much the same after the great Basilica of Our Lady of Africa was built above it. St. Pius V

Dear Family of Mary!

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Pius V, the Pope of the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Pope Pius V rallied the Christian faithful of Europe to withstand the invasion of the Turks by praying the Rosary. On October 7, 1571, there was a decisive battle at sea that destroyed the Turkish fleet, sending them limping home. Europe was saved. Pope Pius V believed it was praying the Rosary that turned the tide, through the intercession of Our Lady. He declared October 7 the Feast of the Holy Rosary. He also gave Our Lady the title of Our Lady of Victory and referred to her as "Help of Christians".

As in the time of St. Pius V, we have many threats to our Christian way of life, and we face fierce enemies all over the world. Again, the call to pray the Rosary has gone out. This time Jesus Himself as asking us to pray the Rosary, through a Nigerian Bishop, Bishop Oliver Dashe Doeme, Diocese of Maiduguri, Nigeria. Many thanks to Bishop Doeme for having the courage to share his remarkable vision. Our faith is being strengthened by his witness. The call to pray the Rosary has been consistent from Our Lady of Medjugorje as well. Here are three notable messages:

June 12, 1986 "Dear children! Today I call you to begin to pray the Rosary with a living faith. That way I will be able to help you. You, dear children, wish to obtain graces, but you are not praying. I am not able to help you because you do not want to get started. Dear children, I am calling you to pray the Rosary and that your Rosary be an obligation which you shall fulfill with joy. That way you shall understand the reason I am with you this long. I desire to teach you to pray. Thank you for having responded to my call."

February 25, 1988 "Dear children! Today again I am calling you to prayer to complete surrender to God. You know that I love you and am coming here out of love so I could show you the path to peace and salvation for your souls. I want you to obey me and not permit satan to seduce you. Dear children, satan is very strong and, therefore, I ask you to dedicate your prayers to me so that those who are under his influence can be saved. Give witness by your life. Sacrifice your lives for the salvation of the world. I am with you, and I am grateful to you, but in heaven you shall receive the Father's reward which He has promised to you. Therefore, dear children, do not be afraid. If you pray, satan cannot injure you even a little bit because you are God's children and He is watching over you. Pray and let the rosary always be in your hand as a sign to satan that you belong to me. Thank you for having responded to my call."

January 25, 1991 "Dear children! Today, like never before, I invite you to prayer. Let your prayer be a prayer for peace. Satan is strong and desires to destroy not only human life, but also nature and the planet on which you live. Therefore, dear children, pray that through prayer you can protect yourselves with God's blessing of peace. God has sent me among you so that I may help you. If you so wish, grasp for the rosary. Even the rosary alone can work miracles in the world and in your lives. I bless you and I remain with you for as long as it is God's will. Thank you for not betraying my presence here and I thank you because your response is serving the good and the peace."

Even the Rosary alone can work miracles in the world and in your lives!!!! Let us take up the weapon we have been given and fight! So many souls hang in the balance!! Pray, pray, pray!

Fr. Vito Perrone new Chaplain for Star of the Sea School

Father Vito Perrone, a priest of “impeccable orthodoxy,” will be new Star of the Sea chaplain

On April 28, the Archdiocese of San Francisco announced new clergy appointments. The announcement included the news that Fr. Vito Perrone, of the Contemplatives of St. Joseph, will serve as the new Chaplain of Star of the Sea School, starting May 1.
The appointment addresses the controversy at the school which began when the pastor of Star of the Sea, Fr. Joseph Illo, announced that only boys would be allowed to serve at the altar–a decision at the pastor’s discretion. Fr. Illo’s announcement did not go down well with some of the parents at the school, who began a vendetta against him, which included retaining San Francisco’s hired PR gun, Sam Singer, to orchestrate efforts to have Illo removed.
The appointment of Fr. Perrone, a priest of impeccable orthodoxy, does a number of things. It ensures that the students at Star of the Sea will continue to receive the same level of fidelity to the Catholic faith as they had from Fr. Illo. It should defuse the concerns of parents, whose relations with Illo had degenerated to such a state that the parish was suffering. It should comfort parents who can be confident that their children will continue to receive a faithful Catholic education, without the distraction of battling against the parish’s pastor—assuming faithful Catholic education is what they want. It will strengthen Fr. Illo in his work at building the parish and the Oratory of St. Philip Neri, without those same distractions. Faithful Catholics should be happy as well. Those who know Fr. Perrone know that his appointment to any parish cannot possibly result in a diminution of Catholicity.

Will things be better for Fr. Perrone than they were for Fr. Illo?

Fr. Perrone will still be attached to the Contemplatives of Saint Joseph. Their webpage describes their mission:

The priests and brothers lead a life of deep contemplative prayer and serve in an active apostolate within the Archdiocese of San Francisco and surrounding Bay Area dioceses. This niche used to house a statue of the Virgin - A Moment with Mary

An initiative of the Association Mary of Nazareth  Subscribe April 29 – Our Lady of La Ghiara (Italy, 1596) This niche used to house a statue of the Virgin    Our Lady of La Ghiara is located in the city of Reggio Emilia, north-central Italy. The term "ghiara" refers to the gravel of the stream that descends along the wall of the Servite convent established there. There used to be a niche that housed a statue of the Madonna dating back to about 1300, called the Madonna della guiara. A church was built in 1596 to replace Our Lady’s niche. On April 29th of the same year a 17-year boy named Marchino, deaf and dumb from birth, was miraculously healed there. Pope Clement VIII recognized the miraculous nature of the healing and approved the pilgrimage to this place. A larger shrine was then built, and miracles occurred in greater numbers. Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! I am with you also today to lead you to salvation. Your soul is restless because your spirit is weak and tired from all worldly things. You, little children, pray to the Holy Spirit that He may transform you and fill you with His strength of faith and hope, so that you may be firm in this battle against evil. I am with you and intercede for you before my Son Jesus. Thank you for having responded to my call." (April 25, 2015)

Many of you have suggested that a key to this message is in the first two lines of the Magnificat, Our Lady's song of joy. I agree! Let's take some time that Scripture.

"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;

And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." (Luke 1: 46-47)

Clearly Our Lady refers to her soul and her spirit individually. She is aware of these two facets of her person. And what does she say about each?

"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord..." Our Lady's soul proclaims. To proclaim is to "announce officially or publicly." Another definition says, "declare something one considers important with due emphasis." To proclaim is a public act, a way of spreading the news. It is social in nature since a proclamation must have an audience. And it is saying something with certainty, putting your name and your person behind it. So Our Lady was declaring with great conviction that the Lord is great! And this was an act of her soul.

I like that part of it. Our soul is the seat of our person, the place where our unique being exists, with all our faculties and higher gifts. Our soul is associated with our heart, the center of our being, with our mind and our will and our senses and emotions. So proclaiming something from the soul is saying it with one's entire being. It is putting everything on the line for that proclamation. Doesn't this sound like Our Lady? She loves God with her whole heart, her whole soul and her whole strength. And with all of herself she honors God as great!

Okay, now for the next line: "And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." Our Lady's spirit rejoices in God her Savior. The meaning of rejoice: "feel or show great joy or delight." I like this list of synonyms: "happiness, pleasure, joy, gladness, delight, elation, jubilation, exuberance, exultation, celebration, revelry and merrymaking." Clearly her spirit is capable of feeling, of experiencing the joy of knowing God. Her spirit encounters God and is filled with joy. She knows her Lord. And that knowledge fills her with delight.

I like this so much! It makes sense to me. Our Lady's spirit communicates with God and receives from Him so much grace that the joy is uncontainable. It tells us something about the spirit's function. Our spirits are what make us able to experience God, who is Spirit. Our spirits know and communicate with God. This is how we pray, how we worship, how we adore. Our spirit reaches out to God in prayer.

So what does this tell us? Well, Our Lady told us something about our souls and spirits: "Your soul is restless because your spirit is weak and tired from all worldly things."   Our souls are restless. It is as if they are attention deficit. They are not focused. Our Lady's soul was focused on one thing, God. And it was capable of proclaiming the greatness of God. Our Lady's soul was not restless, it was busy loving and praising God.

Our Lady also tells us our spirits are weak and tired from all worldly things. Our Lady's spirit was anything but weak or tired. Her spirit was rejoicing in the Lord. It was filled with joy, elation, happiness. No tiredness here. Our souls are weak and tired because they do not encounter God. They are left to be helplessly bombarded with worldly affairs. Why? Because we don't pray, we don't put God in the first place, we are preoccupied with temporal affairs, and we are worldly. Our Lady is anything but these things.

I think Our Lady's spirit of joy in God is what is feeding her soul with truth and wonder, so that she can proclaim the greatness of God.

I think our spirits are full of the world which is feeding our souls garbage and that is why our souls are upset, restless, aimless and lost.

So, the answer for us is still the same: "You, little children, pray to the Holy Spirit that He may transform you and fill you with His strength of faith and hope, so that you may be firm in this battle against evil."

If we want to have spirits and souls like Mary, we need to call on the Holy Spirit in prayer and repent of our worldliness. We need His strength of faith and hope so we can fight off the temptations that our enemy constantly is throwing at us. We need to fill our spirits with God and feed our souls with the wonder and knowledge of the greatness of God. Then we will be able to magnify the Lord like our Mother.
