St. Teresa of Avila
Dear Family of Mary!
April 25, 2000 "Dear
children! Also today I call you to conversion. You are concerned too
much about material things and little about spiritual ones. Open your
hearts and start again to work more on your personal conversion. Decide
every day to dedicate time to God and to prayer until prayer becomes a
joyful meeting with God for you. Only in this way will your life have
meaning and with joy you will contemplate eternal life. Thank you for
having responded to my call."
Today
we remember St. Teresa of Avila, the great Carmalite mystic! St. Teresa
tells us that in her early life she was very worldly. Even in the
convent where she began her vocation, St Teresa spent more time in
conversation and visiting than in prayer. Only after some years did she
begin to hunger for God, and she began to pray in earnest. Eventually
God favored her with many visions and insights and she became herself a
window into eternity for those who followed her teachings.
I
think this message from April 25, 2000 could have been given to Teresa
when she was young! Our Lady has come to us to call us to conversion.
She wants us to be concerned about spiritual things, about the meaning
of our lives, about who God is, and about eternity. She wants us to turn
from earthly vanities, all those things we spend so much time on but
really have no value for our spiritual lives.
When
Teresa was converting she started with just an hour of prayer a day.
And she says it was really hard to last the whole hour. We may have a
similar experience when we begin to pray. It may be hard to stay focused
for even 5 minutes. But if we decide, if we dedicate time to God and to
prayer, God will do the rest. St. Teresa didn't make up her spiritual
experiences. They did not come from her. They were gifts from heaven,
given to her because she chose to pray and she stuck with that choice.
So,
if we decide for prayer, and we stick with that choice, God will meet
us more than half way. He will run to meet us like the father of the
prodigal, and embrace us with His love. We will be given so much more
than we could imagine. As Our Lady says, "Decide every day to
dedicate time to God and to prayer until prayer becomes a joyful meeting
with God for you. Only in this way will your life have meaning and with
joy you will contemplate eternal life." Prayer will be a
joyful meeting with Our Father, with Jesus, with the Holy Spirit. It
will be so happy, so peaceful, so strengthening! And we will learn to
contemplate eternal life. Our thoughts and our emotions will be filled
with heaven!
St. Teresa of Avila, please pray for us that we will be able to convert and open our hearts to prayer!
In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
