At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit sent down upon the disciples rays of sacred fire; but he infused Mary with them all. He espoused her again, giving himself to her more intimately than ever before. We truthfully can say that the Holy Spirit will never communicate to any creature with such profusion as with Mary. On that day, a prodigious change took place in the apostles, who from carnal and rude men became spiritual and divine. But a still more important change happened in Mary, who did not pass like them from a state of imperfection to one of holiness; but from a sublime degree of perfection to another without comparison more sublime.

The holiness of God being infinite in itself, nothing can limit his outward communications. In respect to Mary, he placed no limit other than that which the essentially finite capacity of a pure creature can place.

And as this capacity can always increase—without departing from the bounds of the finite—let us not oppose any thought to the idea that in Mary it extended beyond the understanding of men and angels.
