May 16 - Saint Simon Stock and the Brown Scapular

“Whoever dies in this garment will be preserved from eternal flames”

Simon
Stock was born in England in the late 12th century. He became Prior
General of the Carmelite Order in the 13th century, at a time when, in
competition with the flourishing of new orders, the Carmel was
threatened with extinction. Simon Stock then turned to Mary and asked:
“Was not the Carmel intended by Our Lady and closely linked to her
honor?”

The Mother of
God answered him in an apparition that likely happened on July 16, 1251,
when she gave him the wonderful gift of the Scapular. Here is an
excerpt of that story from the 'Fioretti of Our Lady of Mount Carmel':
Our Lady
appeared to him, surrounded by a multitude of angels, holding in her
hand a Scapular. She said: “This is a sign for you and a privilege for
all Carmelites: whoever dies in this garment will be preserved from
eternal flames.” And she gave Simon the Scapular.
