In the first year after the founding of the monastery, the monks gathered in the church saw a pillar of light touch the altar, which turned into a luminous boat carrying the Virgin Mary, some angels and saints, and also the Holy Innocents murdered by order of Herod. The Virgin asked the monks to associate the people to this miracle, so a pilgrimage was organized. It lasted five days in all, gathering Egyptian, Ethiopian, Maronite, Greek, Nestorian, Latin and even Muslim pilgrims, who stayed at huge campsites... The apparitions at the Al-Maghti monastery were well known in Ethiopia, thanks to the Book of Miracles of Mary.
