Prisoners and the possessed are delivered in great numbers

On a rocky cliff at Laghet (above the city of Nice, France), there has been since the 15th century a small chapel surrounded by a few houses where farmers and herdsmen used to live. It was restored in 1625 by a priest who installed a beautiful statue of the Virgin that is still visible today in the church above the altar.

In 1652, the Virgin Mary manifested her presence in this chapel by spectacular healings. The release of prisoners and the deliverance of the possessed occurred in great numbers. The news spread, attracting people from the whole region. The bishop of Nice appointed a commission of theologians to examine the events. On December 20, 1653, the commission recognized the authenticity of the miracles. A larger church was later inaugurated on November 21, 1656.

Saint Francesco Maria da Camporosso was cured as a child through the intercession of the Virgin of Laghet. Later, as a Capuchin friar, he became the apostle of Genoa, a city that honors him with the name of Padre Santo. As for the good Pope John (future Saint John XXIII), then nuncio in France, he presided over the celebrations of the third centenary of the shrine of Laghet in 1952. It was he who canonized Padre Santo in 1962.
