June 25 – Our Lady of Grace (Forli, Italy, 1548)

A mother for all humanity
|
|
For
us Christians, the Virgin Mary is our mother, as Jesus wished at the
time of his death on the cross, by making his mother a Mother to all
humanity.
May I
express here today the joy I feel every time I meet on the square of the
Basilica of Fourvière that overlooks the city of Lyons (France), a
Muslim family who comes to present a newborn baby to Our Lady, placing
their child under her maternal protection and entrusting it to her
intercession. Occasionally the family asks me to bless the child in the
name of God, and I am glad to oblige them.
As
Christians, we sense that we are advancing "with Mary," next to her as a
child who holds its mother’s hand. On the path that leads us towards
God, we look at her as to the one who is the "first on the path," to
quote one of our French hymns.
We see
the wonders that God worked in this young girl, for her and with her,
and we ask the Lord: "Why would you not do the same with your other
children?" It is almost as if the grace of the Mother continued to
unfold within the great family of humanity.
